In 2016, it hit me: Why did I know so much about the Kardashian family without ever watching their reality show or actively seeking information about them? The answer was simple: memes and internet culture.
That gave me an idea: What if we used that same language to tell the news? This idea started a long-term viral concept for TV2 Østjylland that lasted more than six years.
From 2016 to 2022, I created memes for TV2 Østjylland on an almost daily basis, working closely with the daily editor.
Each meme was created based on a news story from that day, and we would write 3–5 lines about the news below in the captions.
This work was regularly shared by Anders Hemmingsen and many other Danish meme pages and even covered by international outlets like Forbes.
